The Atari 5200 and 7800 — Atari’s Uphill Struggle
The Atari 5200 (1982) and 7800 ProSystem (delayed to 1986) represented Atari’s attempts to move beyond the aging 2600. The 5200 was technically capable but hampered by notorious non-centering joysticks and incompatibility with 2600 cartridges. The 7800 was better — its MARIA chip handled up to 100 sprites, and it played 2600 games — but Nintendo had used the delay to establish total market dominance. Together these consoles document Atari’s transformation from the company that defined home gaming into a brand struggling to remain relevant against more focused competition.
