The Atari XEGS — Computer and Console Combined
The Atari XE Game System (1987) was a detachable-keyboard version of the Atari 65XE computer that could function as either a game console or a full home computer. Atari’s strategy was to offer the established 8-bit software library in console form while retaining computer functionality — a hybrid approach that anticipated modern all-in-one devices by decades. Arriving too late to challenge the NES, the XEGS nonetheless served a loyal Atari 8-bit community and allowed the extensive Atari software library to remain accessible through the late 1980s and early 1990s.
