The Bit Corporation Gamate — Taiwan’s Game Boy Challenger

The Bit Corporation Gamate, released in 1990 by the Taiwanese company Bit Corporation, was one of the more capable unlicensed Game Boy competitors — using a custom processor and a 160×152 pixel monochrome LCD display to deliver a handheld gaming experience at a lower price than Nintendo’s dominant Game Boy. While the Gamate’s hardware was technically modest, its library of around 70 titles included original games developed specifically for the platform alongside budget conversions of popular game concepts. The Gamate found its market in Asia and parts of Europe where price sensitivity made the Game Boy’s cost prohibitive, representing Taiwan’s participation in the early handheld gaming market.
