The Nintendo 64 — The 3D Revolution
The Nintendo 64, launched in Japan in June 1996, was the console that defined three-dimensional gaming — delivering Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, two games that fundamentally changed what video games could be. Using a custom 64-bit MIPS R4300i processor alongside the Reality Co-Processor for 3D rendering, the N64 produced graphics that amazed players accustomed to 16-bit gaming. Super Mario 64 invented the 3D platformer genre; Ocarina of Time is regularly cited as the greatest video game ever made; GoldenEye 007 defined console first-person shooters. Despite losing the commercial war to PlayStation, the N64’s first-party software library remains among the most acclaimed in gaming history.
