The Nintendo Game Boy Pocket — The Slimmed-Down Game Boy
The Nintendo Game Boy Pocket, released in July 1996, was a redesigned version of the original Game Boy — significantly slimmer and lighter, with a sharper higher-contrast display that improved on the original’s somewhat blurry screen. Running on two AAA batteries rather than four AAs, the Pocket was genuinely more pocketable than its predecessor while maintaining full compatibility with the entire Game Boy software library. Released two years before the Game Boy Color, the Pocket extended the original platform’s life and introduced a new generation of users to Game Boy gaming with improved hardware that retained everything that had made the original successful.
