The Nintendo GameCube — Nintendo’s Most Underrated Console
The Nintendo GameCube, launched in September 2001 in Japan and November 2001 in North America, was Nintendo’s entry into the sixth generation console market — competing against Sony’s PlayStation 2 and Microsoft’s Xbox with a compact, distinctive design and a proprietary mini-DVD format. Using an IBM PowerPC ”Gekko” processor at 485 MHz alongside ATI’s ”Flipper” GPU, the GameCube delivered impressive visual performance. Its library included some of Nintendo’s finest work: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Pikmin, and Resident Evil 4 (originally a GameCube exclusive). Commercially it sold approximately 21 million units — modest compared to the PS2’s 155 million — but its software quality is widely celebrated, and GameCube games are highly valued by collectors today.
