The Panasonic FZ-1 3DO — The Original 3DO

The Panasonic FZ-1 R·E·A·L 3DO Interactive Multiplayer, launched in October 1993 at $699, was the first hardware implementation of Trip Hawkins’ 3DO standard — an ambitious open platform conceived by Electronic Arts’ founder that allowed multiple manufacturers to produce compatible hardware. The FZ-1 used a 32-bit ARM60 processor at 12.5 MHz with custom graphics and audio processors, delivering CD-ROM-based gaming that was technically impressive for its launch year. Despite genuinely capable hardware and an interesting software library, the $699 launch price — more than double competitors — combined with limited software support from major publishers doomed it commercially. The Panasonic FZ-1 is today a sought-after collector’s piece representing one of gaming’s most intriguing what-ifs.
