The Philips CD-i 210 — Interactive Multimedia Pioneer

The Philips CD-i 210 was one of the early models in Philips’ CD-i (Compact Disc Interactive) range — a multimedia platform launched in 1991 that positioned itself as an educational and entertainment device rather than a pure game console. The CD-i used a 16-bit processor with CD-ROM drive to deliver interactive multimedia content covering encyclopaedias, educational programmes, films, and games. Philips’ partnership with Nintendo during the CD-i’s development led to a licensing agreement that produced three infamous Nintendo-themed games (Hotel Mario and two Zelda titles) — games so poor they became legendary examples of licensed product failure. Despite commercial disappointment as a gaming platform, the CD-i’s multimedia vision anticipated interactive DVD and Blu-ray content by years.
