The Philips Videopac G7000 — Europe’s Answer to the Atari 2600

The Philips Videopac G7000, released in Europe in 1978, was the European name for the Magnavox Odyssey² — a second-generation home game console that competed directly with the Atari 2600 across European markets. Using an Intel 8048 processor and offering a distinctive built-in membrane keyboard alongside its cartridge slot, the Videopac positioned itself as both a game console and an educational tool. Its library of over 60 cartridges covered sports, strategy, action, and educational titles, and the optional Voice module added synthesised speech to compatible games. The Philips brand gave it strong European distribution, and in several European countries the Videopac outsold the Atari 2600, making it a more significant platform in European gaming history than its American counterpart’s modest success might suggest.
