The Sega Dreamcast — Sega’s Final Console

The Sega Dreamcast, launched in Japan in November 1998, was Sega’s final home game console — the first to include a built-in modem for online gaming and a Visual Memory Unit with its own screen. Using a Hitachi SH-4 processor at 200 MHz with NEC’s PowerVR2 GPU, it launched with Sonic Adventure and later produced Shenmue, Jet Set Radio, Soul Calibur, and Skies of Arcadia. Despite innovative hardware and strong critical reception, competition from PlayStation 2 and the loss of EA’s support led Sega to discontinue it in 2001, ending the company’s hardware career after 18 years. The Dreamcast remains one of the most beloved consoles in gaming history.
