The Sega Mega CD II — CD-ROM for the Mega Drive
The Sega Mega CD II (Sega CD 2 in North America), released in 1993, was a redesigned version of Sega’s CD-ROM add-on for the Mega Drive — featuring a top-loading disc mechanism and designed to sit alongside the Mega Drive 2 more elegantly. The Mega CD added CD-ROM capability enabling full-motion video games, CD audio, and titles using additional processing power. While the library included excellent titles like Sonic CD, Lunar: The Silver Star, and Snatcher, the Mega CD’s high price and limited software support prevented it from transforming the platform. It sold approximately 6 million units worldwide.
