The Sega Saturn — The 2D Master

The Sega Saturn, launched in Japan in November 1994, featured dual SH-2 processors alongside specialised graphics processors that made it exceptional at 2D sprite-based games but difficult to program for 3D titles. Its surprise early North American launch at $399 alienated retailers and publishers, and Sony’s PlayStation quickly dominated. Despite this, the Saturn’s Japanese library — Panzer Dragoon Saga, Nights into Dreams, Virtua Fighter 2, Radiant Silvergun — is widely regarded as exceptional. The Saturn has been enthusiastically re-evaluated by collectors who prize its unique 2D capabilities and deep Japanese software library.
