Tiger NBA Jam was a licensed LCD handheld based on Midway’s enormously popular 1993 arcade basketball game — one of the most celebrated sports arcade games ever made. NBA Jam’s two-on-two format, officially licensed NBA players, spectacular dunks, and ”He’s on fire!” commentary made it a cultural phenomenon, and Tiger’s handheld version brought the game’s energy to pocket format. Tiger produced several NBA Jam variants, capitalising on the game’s popularity during its peak arcade and home console years. The NBA Jam licence represented Tiger at its most commercially savvy — attaching its budget handheld format to one of the decade’s most recognisable gaming brands.
