The Tiger R-Zone — Head-Mounted LCD Gaming

The Tiger R-Zone, released in 1995, was Tiger’s response to Nintendo’s Virtual Boy — a head-mounted game device that projected red LCD images through a small eyepiece worn like a visor. Using interchangeable cartridges with a library of over 30 titles, the R-Zone attempted to bring a virtual reality-style gaming experience at a fraction of the Virtual Boy’s price. The red-on-black display and head-worn format gave it novelty appeal, though the gameplay quality of its LCD titles was modest. The R-Zone was later redesigned in multiple formats including a wrist-worn version. Today it is a collector’s curiosity representing Tiger’s most unusual hardware product — a budget alternative to Nintendo’s own red-display headset that launched the same year.
