Amstrad CPC Games — The Complete Home Computer
The Amstrad CPC (Colour Personal Computer), launched in June 1984, was one of the most commercially successful home computers in Europe — selling over 3 million units across its production life and becoming the dominant home computer in France, Spain, and several other European markets. Alan Sugar’s Amstrad offered something that Sinclair and Commodore did not: a complete, integrated system including monitor (colour or green screen) at a single competitive price, eliminating the confusion and additional expense of sourcing a compatible display separately.
The CPC used a Zilog Z80A processor at 4 MHz with 64 KB of RAM (CPC464) or 128 KB (CPC6128), combined with a custom ASIC chip that handled display generation. The three-channel AY-3-8912 sound chip provided music and effects quality comparable to the MSX and Atari ST. The CPC’s game library was extensive — hundreds of software houses produced titles for the platform throughout the late 1980s — and the machine’s 27-colour palette (from a palette of 27) and hardware scrolling made it a capable gaming platform. In Germany, the CPC was sold as the Schneider CPC, becoming one of the most popular home computers in that market.
