Apple II Games — The Computer That Started Apple

The Apple II, introduced by Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs in April 1977, was one of the most important and long-lived personal computers ever produced — remaining in continuous production until 1993, an extraordinary 16-year run. Wozniak’s elegant engineering gave the Apple II capabilities far beyond what a 6502-based machine might suggest: a colour display with 6 colours in hi-res mode, an internal speaker, game paddles support, and a clean expansion architecture with seven internal slots that allowed hardware manufacturers to enhance the machine far beyond its original specification.

The Apple II’s game library was among the richest of any 8-bit platform. Broderbund, Sierra On-Line (originally On-Line Systems), Origin Systems, Infocom, and dozens of other publishers created landmark titles for the platform. The Oregon Trail, Karateka, Ultima, Wizardry, Zork, and Lode Runner all appeared on Apple II, defining game genres that persist to this day. The machine’s prevalence in American schools gave it a particular cultural significance — for millions of American children in the late 1970s and 1980s, the Apple II was their first computer experience.
