Apple Macintosh Games — The GUI Gaming Experience
The Apple Macintosh, introduced on 22 January 1984 with one of the most celebrated advertisements in history, brought the graphical user interface to mainstream computing — and with it, a distinctive approach to gaming that differed fundamentally from the character-mode and sprite-based games of 8-bit computers. The original Mac’s 512×342 pixel monochrome display, while lacking colour, provided crisp black-and-white graphics that suited puzzle games, strategy games, and adventure games particularly well. The mouse-driven interface made point-and-click adventure games natural on the Mac before any other platform.
As the Macintosh evolved through colour displays in the Mac II (1987) and increasingly powerful processors throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, its game library grew to include some of the era’s most celebrated titles. Myst (1993), developed by Cyan for the Mac before any other platform, became the best-selling PC game of its time on the strength of its extraordinary pre-rendered 3D graphics and atmospheric puzzle design. The Mac’s combination of creative professional users, high-quality displays, and capable hardware made it a natural home for graphically ambitious gaming.
