Atari Lynx Games — The First Colour Handheld

The Atari Lynx, released in September 1989 at $189, was the world’s first handheld game console with a colour LCD display — a genuine technological achievement that predated Nintendo’s Game Boy Color by nearly a decade. Designed by Dave Needle and R.J. Mical (who had also designed the Amiga’s custom chips) at Epyx before Atari acquired the project, the Lynx used a custom 65C02 processor combined with Suzy and Mikey custom chips to produce colour graphics with hardware scaling and rotation — capabilities that the monochrome Game Boy could not match.

Despite superior hardware, the Lynx lost the handheld war to Nintendo’s Game Boy decisively, primarily due to its poor battery life (six AA batteries lasting approximately four hours), larger size, and Nintendo’s dominance of retail relationships and software licensing. Tetris — the killer app that drove Game Boy sales — was secured exclusively by Nintendo, dealing the Lynx a blow from which it never recovered. Atari discontinued the Lynx in 1995 after approximately 3 million units sold. The Lynx’s small but quality software library is entirely collectible today.
