ColecoVision Games — Arcade Quality at Home

The ColecoVision, released by Coleco Industries in August 1982, was one of the most technically impressive home game consoles of its era — a machine that delivered near-arcade-quality graphics at a time when most home consoles produced noticeably inferior versions of popular games. Using a Zilog Z80A processor at 3.58 MHz combined with a Texas Instruments TMS9928A video processor capable of 256×192 pixels with 16 colours and 32 hardware sprites, the ColecoVision produced versions of arcade classics like Donkey Kong and Zaxxon that were dramatically closer to the originals than competing systems could manage. The console sold over 2 million units before Coleco exited the video game business following the industry crash of 1983-1984.

CBS Electronics handled European distribution of the ColecoVision, which is why the console is often known as the CBS ColecoVision in Europe. The collection holds a selection of ColecoVision cartridges representing the console’s best-known titles — arcade conversions and original games that showcased the hardware’s capabilities. Several examples feature custom cases, reflecting the collector’s ongoing effort to preserve these games in presentation-quality condition.
