Commodore VIC-20 Games — The Gateway Computer
The Commodore VIC-20, released in 1980-1981, was the world’s first home computer to sell one million units and the machine that introduced millions of people to home computing through an aggressive pricing strategy and William Shatner’s memorable television advertisements asking ”Why buy just a video game?” At $299.95 launch price (falling rapidly to $99), the VIC-20 made home computing accessible to families who could not afford the Apple II or TRS-80.
The VIC-20’s 5 KB of RAM (3.5 KB available to BASIC) was its most significant limitation, constraining game complexity and requiring memory expansion cartridges for more ambitious software. Despite this, a substantial library of games was developed — many on cartridge for instant loading — that demonstrated genuine creativity within the hardware’s constraints. The VIC-20 cartridge format produced some of the most collectable items in Commodore collecting, with original cartridge packaging in good condition increasingly difficult to find.
