Memotech MTX512 Games — The Quality British Platform
The Memotech MTX series — including the MTX500 and MTX512 — were acclaimed for their exceptional build quality and technical capability, yet commercially overshadowed by the Sinclair Spectrum and Commodore 64 despite offering superior keyboards and hardware. The MTX512’s 512 KB of addressable memory (via bank switching) and full-travel keyboard made it genuinely practical for both programming and gaming, attracting a devoted community of enthusiasts who appreciated quality over marketing.
The MTX software library, while small compared to the Spectrum’s thousands of titles, included games that genuinely exploited the hardware’s capabilities. Memotech’s own software and third-party developers produced titles that demonstrated what the Z80A at 4 MHz with quality hardware could achieve. MTX games are today rare collector’s pieces — produced in limited quantities for a platform that never achieved mainstream commercial success, making surviving boxed examples particularly valued.
