Nec PC Engine, TurboGrafx-16 games

NEC PC Engine and TurboGrafx-16 Games — Japan’s Gaming Alternative

The NEC PC Engine, released in Japan in October 1987 (and in North America as the TurboGrafx-16 in 1989), was one of the most technically impressive game consoles of the 16-bit era — featuring a HuC6280 processor (an enhanced 6502) at 7.16 MHz combined with a custom graphics chip capable of 512 simultaneous colours from a palette of 512. Significantly, the PC Engine was the first console to use a CD-ROM drive as an optional peripheral, launching the CD-ROM² add-on in December 1988 and transforming the platform’s software capacity with full motion video, CD-quality audio, and games of unprecedented scale.

The PC Engine dominated the Japanese market for several years, outselling the Mega Drive and rivalling the Super Famicom in its home territory. Its HuCard format — credit card-sized game cards — produced some of the era’s finest shooters (R-Type, Gradius, Gate of Thunder), action games, and role-playing titles. The CD-ROM library in particular is celebrated for its anime-influenced visual novels, RPGs, and the acclaimed Ys series. In North America, the TurboGrafx-16 was less successful against Nintendo’s market dominance, but its library remains highly regarded by collectors worldwide.
