Nintendo Pokémon Mini Games — The World’s Smallest Game Console
The Pokémon Mini, released in November 2001, holds the distinction of being the world’s smallest game console with interchangeable cartridges — a dedicated Pokémon-themed handheld measuring just 113 × 76 × 25 mm and weighing 70 grams. Using a custom processor and a 96×64 pixel monochrome LCD, it was designed explicitly for the Pokémon franchise and sold primarily to young Pokémon fans who wanted a portable gaming experience centred entirely on the Pokémon universe.
The Pokémon Mini’s library consisted of 10 officially released cartridges, all Pokémon-themed, covering puzzle games, action games, and Pokémon-specific activities. While technically modest, the console represented Nintendo’s recognition of the Pokémon franchise’s enormous popularity and the demand for dedicated Pokémon gaming experiences beyond the main series games. Its extreme miniaturisation and exclusively Pokémon focus make it one of the most distinctive and collectible items in Nintendo’s hardware history.
