Philips G7000 and G7400 Games — The European Odyssey²
The Philips Videopac G7000 was the European version of the Magnavox Odyssey², distributed through Philips’s extensive European retail network and sold under the Videopac brand throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. The G7400 was an enhanced successor offering improved graphics through its ”Super” module while maintaining backwards compatibility with the extensive G7000 library. In the Netherlands particularly, the Videopac achieved remarkable market penetration — Philips’s home country gave the console strong retail support that made it one of the most common home game systems of the early 1980s.
The Videopac game library reflects the platform’s dual European and American heritage — many titles were developed or co-developed for both the Magnavox Odyssey² and Philips Videopac markets, while some European-exclusive titles addressed local tastes. The G7000’s built-in keyboard gave it a distinctive educational character that set it apart from purely gaming-focused competitors. Dutch software houses produced several Videopac-exclusive titles, giving the collection a particular Netherlands connection.
