Sega CD Games — CD-ROM Comes to the Mega Drive
The Sega CD (Mega-CD in Europe and Japan), released in 1991 as an add-on for the Sega Mega Drive, was Sega’s attempt to capitalise on the CD-ROM format’s capacity advantages — offering up to 650 MB of storage compared to the 4-8 MB of typical Mega Drive cartridges. This additional capacity enabled full motion video, CD-quality audio, and games of greater length and complexity than cartridge-based competitors. The Sega Multi-Mega (CDX in North America) combined the Mega Drive and Mega-CD into a single compact unit, while also functioning as a portable CD player.
The Sega CD library of approximately 200 titles includes some genuine highlights — Sonic CD (widely considered the best Sonic game), Final Fight CD, Silpheed, and the Lunar series — alongside many mediocre FMV games that became synonymous with early CD-ROM gaming’s excesses. The hardware sold approximately 2.7 million units combined, making Sega CD software rarer than Mega Drive cartridges and increasingly collectible today.
