Sharp MZ-700 and MZ-800 Games — Japan’s Clean Computer Software
The Sharp MZ-700 and MZ-800 series maintained Sharp’s distinctive ”clean computer” philosophy — machines that loaded their operating system and software from external media rather than storing BASIC in ROM. This design gave the MZ platform exceptional flexibility, running multiple BASIC dialects, CP/M, and other operating systems from cassette or disk. The MZ-700 (1982) and MZ-800 (1984) developed a dedicated following in Japan and found export markets in Europe, particularly in Germany where Sharp had strong distribution.
MZ-700 and MZ-800 software reflects the platform’s Japanese engineering character — games and applications that exploited the hardware’s colour capabilities and the flexibility of the clean computer architecture. Software for these machines is rare outside Japan, and this collection represents a genuine preservation effort for a platform that is poorly documented in Western collecting communities.
