SNK Neo-Geo CD Games — Arcade Perfect at Home
The SNK Neo-Geo CD, released in September 1994 at a dramatically lower price than the cartridge-based AES, brought Neo-Geo’s legendary arcade hardware to a more accessible price point by replacing the expensive ROM cartridges with CD-ROM discs. The Neo-Geo platform used the same hardware as SNK’s MVS arcade system — the same processor, the same chips, the same games — making Neo-Geo the only home console of its era to deliver genuinely arcade-perfect conversions rather than approximations.
The Neo-Geo CD’s software library consists of CD versions of the AES cartridge library — the extraordinary roster of SNK fighting games including King of Fighters, Fatal Fury, Samurai Shodown, and Art of Fighting alongside Metal Slug and other action titles. The CD format’s single-speed drive resulted in notorious loading times, but the software quality was unimpeachable — these were the actual arcade games, not compromised ports. Neo-Geo CD software represents some of the finest 2D gaming of the 1990s.
