Sony PlayStation 3 Games — Blu-ray and the Cell Processor
The Sony PlayStation 3, launched in November 2006 at a controversial $499-$599 price point, was Sony’s most ambitious and initially troubled console — a machine built around the revolutionary Cell Broadband Engine processor co-developed with IBM and Toshiba, and incorporating a Blu-ray drive that served both as a gaming medium and a Trojan horse for Sony’s Blu-ray format in the HD format war against HD-DVD. The PS3’s complex Cell architecture made it difficult to program effectively, and early multi-platform games often appeared inferior to Xbox 360 versions.
The PS3’s software library matured significantly after its difficult launch period — The Last of Us, Uncharted 2, Red Dead Redemption, Metal Gear Solid 4, LittleBigPlanet, and God of War III are among the finest games of the generation. The PS3 ultimately sold approximately 87 million units, regaining much of the ground lost to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 in the generation’s second half. Its Blu-ray drive gave it lasting relevance as a media player long after its gaming life ended.
