The IBM PS/2 Model 55 SX — The Mid-Range PS/2

The IBM PS/2 Model 55 SX was a mid-range model in the PS/2 family, using the Intel 80386SX processor — a 32-bit chip with a 16-bit external bus that provided better performance than the 286-based lower PS/2 models while costing less than the full 32-bit 386DX configurations. The Model 55 was positioned for the business professional who needed more than the entry-level Model 30 but could not justify the full Micro Channel Architecture workstation configurations of the higher-end PS/2 models. With VGA graphics, a 3.5-inch floppy, and optional hard drive configurations, it represented a capable mid-1980s business desktop.

The 386SX in the PS/2

Intel’s 386SX was a popular processor choice for mid-range systems in the late 1980s — delivering 32-bit processing capability at a lower cost than the 386DX, making it accessible to a broader range of business buyers. In the PS/2 context, the 386SX gave the Model 55 the ability to run OS/2 — IBM’s multitasking operating system that required a 286 or better — as well as taking advantage of the growing range of 386-optimised DOS software.
