The IBM ThinkPad 360CS — Colour Comes to the Mid-Range ThinkPad
The IBM ThinkPad 360CS, released in 1994, brought colour display technology to IBM’s mid-range ThinkPad lineup — the ”C” in 360CS indicating a colour screen, and the ”S” indicating the IBM 486SLC2 processor. The 360CS used IBM’s own 486SLC2 chip — an Intel-licensed 486 variant with an 8 KB on-chip cache and clock-doubling technology that delivered 486DX-comparable performance at lower cost and power consumption. This combination of colour display and capable processor made the 360CS a practical business laptop for users who needed visual presentations and colour document editing on the road.
IBM’s Custom Processors
IBM’s use of its own 486SLC2 processor in the ThinkPad 360CS reflected the company’s semiconductor capabilities — IBM manufactured its own variants of Intel-licensed processors with enhancements including larger caches and improved power management. The 486SLC2’s clock-doubling technology ran the processor core at twice the system bus speed, delivering significantly better performance than a standard 486SX at the same bus speed. For laptop use, the chip’s power efficiency was particularly valuable.
