The Sega SC-3000 — Sega’s Home Computer

The Sega SC-3000, released in Japan in July 1983 simultaneously with the SG-1000 game console, was Sega’s home computer — a BASIC-programmable machine sharing hardware with the SG-1000 but adding a full keyboard. It competed in the Japanese home computer market against the MSX standard, Sharp MZ series, and other domestic computers, and was also sold in Australia and New Zealand where it achieved reasonable commercial success. The SC-3000 represents Sega’s early ambition to compete in the computer market as well as gaming — a dimension of the company’s history largely overshadowed by its later console success.
