The ICL MikroMikko NB 386LC — A Finnish Laptop

The ICL MikroMikko NB 386LC was a laptop computer produced under the MikroMikko brand — the Finnish personal computer line that originated at Nokia and was acquired by British computer company ICL in 1991. The ”NB” designation indicated a notebook configuration, and the 386LC referred to Intel’s low-cost 386 variant used in many affordable laptops of the early 1990s. As a Finnish product, the MikroMikko NB 386LC represents a significant piece of domestic computing history — the laptop phase of what had been Finland’s most important computer brand.

From Nokia to ICL

The MikroMikko brand’s journey from Nokia to ICL reflected the dramatic changes in Finland’s technology industry in the early 1990s. Nokia, facing the devastating Finnish recession of 1990-1993 and undertaking a strategic concentration on telecommunications, sold its computer division to ICL as part of a broader rationalisation. ICL — itself a British computer company with roots in the UK’s domestic computer industry — retained the MikroMikko brand for the Finnish market, recognising its strong local recognition. The NB 386LC was among the first MikroMikko laptops produced under ICL ownership.

Finnish Computing Heritage

The MikroMikko brand holds a unique place in Finnish technology history — the country’s domestic personal computer line, launched on the Finnish name day of Mikko in 1981, just 48 days after the IBM PC. For Finnish businesses and institutions that had standardised on MikroMikko systems through the 1980s, the NB 386LC provided continuity of brand and compatibility while bringing laptop portability to the established MikroMikko ecosystem.
