The Nintendo Game Boy Advance SP — The Clamshell Redesign

The Nintendo Game Boy Advance SP, released in February 2003, was a radical redesign of the GBA — replacing the horizontal slate form factor with a clamshell design featuring a front-lit (later backlit) LCD display, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and a form factor that folded to a remarkably compact size. The SP addressed the original GBA’s most significant criticism — its lack of a backlit display — while also improving battery life and portability. The AGS-101 revision added a true backlit display that dramatically improved visual quality, making it one of the finest handheld gaming devices ever produced and a favourite among collectors today.
