The Nokia N-Gage — Finland’s Game Phone
The Nokia N-Gage, launched in October 2003, was Nokia’s ambitious attempt to combine a mobile phone with a dedicated gaming handheld — targeting the Game Boy Advance market with a device that also made calls, played MP3s, and connected to the internet. Using Symbian OS on a 104 MHz ARM processor with a 176×208 pixel display, the N-Gage offered a genuine mobile gaming platform with a library of approximately 50 games. Unfortunately its design compromised both phone and gaming functions: holding it sideways to talk earned it the nickname ”taco phone,” and changing game cards required removing the battery. Despite selling approximately 3 million units, it failed to challenge Nintendo’s Game Boy dominance. As a Finnish device from Nokia’s peak era, the N-Gage holds particular significance in this collection.
