The Apple II Europlus — The Apple II for Europe

The Apple II Europlus was Apple’s official adaptation of the Apple II for European markets, released in 1978 and produced through the early 1980s. Functionally identical to the American Apple II, the Europlus was modified to run on 220V/50Hz power (standard in Europe), output PAL video signals for European television sets, and in some markets include localised keyboard layouts. It represented Apple’s first serious attempt to establish itself in European markets and was an important machine in the early history of personal computing across the continent.

European Adaptations

The most significant technical differences from the US Apple II were the power supply (redesigned for 220V 50Hz rather than 110V 60Hz), the video output (adapted for PAL rather than NTSC), and the keyboard (some models featured country-specific layouts). Internally, the hardware was essentially identical to the US II Plus, with the same MOS 6502 processor, the same expansion slots, and the same Applesoft BASIC in ROM.

Historical Significance

The Europlus introduced thousands of European users to serious personal computing at a time when most European manufacturers were focused on the home computer market. Its open architecture and expanding software library made it a capable business and educational machine, and it paved the way for Apple’s later European success with the Macintosh.
