The Sega Master System Plus — Sega’s 8-bit European Champion
The Sega Master System, launched in Europe in 1987, was technically superior to the Nintendo NES but struggled in North America due to Nintendo’s exclusive licensing agreements. In Europe and Brazil, however, the Master System achieved significant commercial success — outselling the NES in several European markets and dominating Brazil so completely that Tectoy continued producing it until the 2000s. The Master System Plus bundle included the Light Phaser gun peripheral. The European Master System library includes excellent titles like Alex Kidd, Phantasy Star, and Sonic the Hedgehog, and the console’s European success gave Sega the foundation for its later Mega Drive dominance on the continent.
