The Watara Supervision — Budget Game Boy Challenger

The Watara Supervision, released in 1992 at a price significantly below Nintendo’s Game Boy, was a Hong Kong-manufactured handheld that attempted to compete in the budget segment of the handheld market. Using a 65C02-compatible processor and a 160×160 pixel LCD display, the Supervision offered basic gaming at an accessible price. A television link cable allowed games to be played on a television screen — an unusual feature for a handheld of this era. The Supervision’s software library of around 70 titles consists primarily of budget games, and it is today a collector’s curiosity representing the budget alternatives that attempted to challenge Nintendo’s handheld dominance through price rather than software quality.
