The IBM ThinkPad X21 — The Ultralight ThinkPad

The IBM ThinkPad X21, released in 2001, was an early member of the ThinkPad X-series — IBM’s ultralight laptop line designed for mobile professionals who prioritised weight and portability over maximum performance or screen size. Using an Intel Pentium III-M processor in a compact chassis without a built-in optical drive, the X21 weighed approximately 1.5 kg — significantly lighter than mainstream laptops of the era. The X-series established a category that ThinkPad would maintain through the X40, X60, X200, and X1 Carbon, each generation pushing the boundaries of what was achievable in an ultralight professional laptop.

The X-Series Philosophy

IBM’s X-series represented a deliberate trade-off: accept smaller screen, slower processor, and no optical drive in exchange for a laptop light enough to carry comfortably all day. For executives who spent most of their time in meetings and on aeroplanes rather than at desks, this trade-off made perfect sense. The X21’s 12.1-inch display, excellent keyboard, and long battery life (with optional extended battery) made it a practical daily driver for road warriors who needed ThinkPad quality in the smallest possible package.
