The IBM ThinkPad X40 — The Lightest ThinkPad

Released in early 2004, the IBM ThinkPad X40 was the lightest and most compact ThinkPad ever produced at that point — weighing just 1.25 kg and measuring only 2.1 cm thick. Using an Intel Pentium M processor at 1.2 GHz and a small hard drive or optional solid-state storage, the X40 achieved its remarkable weight through aggressive miniaturisation and by omitting the optical drive. It represented the pinnacle of IBM’s ultralight laptop engineering and became one of the most beloved ThinkPads among mobile professionals who valued portability above all else.

Solid-State Storage Option

The X40 was among the first ThinkPads to offer a solid-state drive option — using a compact flash card as the primary storage medium. While the capacity was limited compared to conventional hard drives, the solid-state option eliminated moving parts, reduced weight further, and improved shock resistance for a laptop that would inevitably be carried everywhere. This early flirtation with solid-state storage anticipated the SSD revolution that would transform laptop design a decade later.
