The ICL MikroMikko NB386S — Finnish Laptop Engineering
The ICL MikroMikko NB386S was a laptop computer in the MikroMikko notebook range, using an Intel 386SX processor in the compact notebook format. Like its NB 386LC sibling, it represented the MikroMikko brand under ICL ownership — continuing the Finnish computer line that Nokia had originated in 1981. The 386SX processor provided full 32-bit processing capability in a power-efficient package suitable for battery-powered portable use, making the NB386S a capable business laptop for the Finnish corporate market that had built its computing infrastructure around the MikroMikko platform throughout the 1980s.
MikroMikko’s Legacy
The MikroMikko notebook series represented the final chapter of domestic Finnish PC manufacturing before global market forces rendered local production uneconomical. Fujitsu Siemens eventually took over the operations and closed the Espoo factory in 2000, ending nearly two decades of Finnish computer production. The NB386S is a tangible piece of this history — a laptop that carried the MikroMikko name through the transition from Nokia to ICL to Fujitsu, maintaining continuity for Finnish users across multiple corporate ownership changes.
