The Multitech MPF-IB Micro Professor — Learning the Z80
The Multitech Micro Professor MPF-IB was the Z80-based variant of the MPF educational single-board computer series, using the Zilog Z80 processor rather than the 6502 of the MPF-I/65. The Z80 version served students learning the architecture that underpinned CP/M computers, the Sinclair ZX Spectrum, the Amstrad CPC, and many other popular machines of the era. Like its 6502 sibling, the MPF-IB provided a hexadecimal keypad, seven-segment displays, and direct hardware access for hands-on assembly language learning.
Z80 vs 6502 Education
The existence of both Z80 and 6502 variants of the MPF series reflected the split in the early 1980s microprocessor market between these two dominant 8-bit architectures. Academic institutions teaching microprocessor programming needed to cover both, and the MPF series provided a consistent educational platform for each. Students who learned on Z80 MPF boards developed skills directly applicable to the CP/M computers that dominated business computing and the home computers that dominated the consumer market.
