The Sinclair ZX Spectrum+ — The Improved Keyboard
Released in October 1984, the Sinclair ZX Spectrum+ was a cosmetically revised version of the ZX Spectrum 48K that addressed the most persistent criticism of the original — its rubber keyboard. The Spectrum+ replaced the flat rubber keys with a more conventional keyboard featuring proper key travel and a more professional appearance, while maintaining complete hardware and software compatibility with the entire existing Spectrum software library. It also added a reset button and a new angular case design, though internally the hardware was essentially unchanged from the 48K Spectrum.
The Keyboard Improvement
The Spectrum’s rubber keyboard had been a constant source of complaints since the original launch in 1982. While it was functional and actually reasonably responsive when used correctly, it looked and felt cheap compared to the full-travel keyboards of competing computers like the Commodore 64 and Dragon 32. The Spectrum+’s improved keyboard was widely welcomed, making extended programming and typing sessions significantly more comfortable. The new case design also gave the machine a more professional appearance that better suited its growing use in schools and businesses.
