The VTech Socrates — The Educational Video System
The VTech Socrates, released in 1988, was VTech’s most ambitious educational product of the decade — a dedicated educational video system that connected to a television set and used interchangeable cartridges to deliver curriculum-based educational games across subjects including mathematics, science, language arts, and geography. Named after the Greek philosopher famous for his teaching method, the Socrates was VTech’s attempt to create an educational alternative to the Nintendo Entertainment System — a device positioned specifically for learning rather than entertainment, but using the same television-connected, cartridge-based format that made the NES so successful with children.
Competing with Nintendo
The Socrates arrived at a time when the Nintendo Entertainment System had transformed the children’s consumer electronics market. VTech recognised that children wanted devices that connected to the family television and used cartridges — and that parents wanted assurance that screen time was educationally valuable.
