The HP 2133 Mini-Note PC — HP’s Netbook Pioneer

Released in May 2008, the HP 2133 Mini-Note PC was HP’s entry into the netbook market — the category of small, affordable laptops that Asus had pioneered with the Eee PC in 2007 and which briefly threatened to reshape the laptop industry. The 2133 distinguished itself from many competitors with premium aluminium construction, a relatively large keyboard (92% of full size), and a high-resolution 8.9-inch display — positioning it as a more premium alternative to the typically plasticky netbooks that dominated the category.

The Netbook Phenomenon

The netbook category emerged in 2007-2008 as a response to the perceived demand for cheap, small, internet-focused laptops for basic computing tasks. Intel’s Atom processor and Microsoft’s decision to offer Windows XP at reduced prices for netbooks enabled a wave of affordable machines starting at $300-400. The category was briefly enormously popular — in 2009, netbooks accounted for 20% of all laptop sales — before declining rapidly after 2010 when the iPad and increasingly capable smartphones offered a better experience for casual computing and the category’s compromised performance frustrated users who needed more capability.

Via C7-M Processor

Unlike most netbooks which used Intel’s Atom processor, the HP 2133 used Via Technologies’ C7-M processor — a differentiating choice that gave it a slightly different performance profile. The Via C7-M ran at up to 1.6 GHz but consumed more power than Intel’s Atom, resulting in shorter battery life than competing netbooks. This trade-off, combined with the 2133’s premium price relative to Atom-based competitors, limited its commercial success despite its superior build quality.
