Atari Jaguar Games — The 64-bit Misfire
Released in November 1993 at $249, the Atari Jaguar was marketed as the world’s first 64-bit home game console — a claim based on its pair of custom chips (Tom and Jerry) that together processed 64-bit data, though the main processor was a conventional 68000. Despite the marketing claims, the Jaguar delivered genuine graphical capability that exceeded the SNES and Mega Drive, and its launch title Alien vs. Predator demonstrated what the hardware could achieve in skilled hands.
The Jaguar’s commercial failure was swift and complete. Atari’s weakened financial position limited marketing spend, the controller’s 17-button design was widely criticised, and the development tools were difficult to use — resulting in a small software library dominated by mediocre third-party titles. When Sony’s PlayStation arrived in 1994, the Jaguar’s position became untenable. Atari discontinued it in 1996 after selling fewer than 250,000 units. Today the Jaguar’s small software library makes complete collection achievable, and the platform has a devoted enthusiast community producing new homebrew titles.
