Dragon 32 and Dragon 64 Games — Wales’s Own Computer
The Dragon 32 and Dragon 64 were home computers manufactured by Dragon Data Ltd of Port Talbot, Wales, released in 1982 and 1983 respectively. Using the Motorola 6809 processor — widely considered the most elegantly designed 8-bit chip ever made — the Dragon computers were closely related to the Tandy TRS-80 Color Computer, sharing the same Motorola MC6883/6847 chipset. The Dragon was one of the very few home computers designed and manufactured in Wales, and its brief but eventful commercial life ended when Dragon Data went into receivership in 1984.
The Dragon’s software library, while smaller than those of the Spectrum or Commodore 64, reflected the platform’s technical character — the 6809’s sophisticated architecture attracted serious programmers who produced games and utilities that exploited the processor’s capabilities. Dragon software was primarily distributed on cassette tape, with a smaller selection of cartridge releases. The Dragon’s relative rarity today — both hardware and software — makes any complete Dragon game in good condition a genuinely collectible piece of Welsh computing heritage.
