SNK Neo-Geo Pocket Color Games — The Fighting Game Handheld
The SNK Neo-Geo Pocket Color, released in March 1999, was SNK’s second attempt at a handheld console — the first to feature a colour display — and one of the most respected handhelds ever produced despite its brief commercial life. Using a Toshiba TLCS900H processor at 6.144 MHz with 64 colours on screen from a palette of 4096, the NGPC delivered excellent 2D graphics for a handheld of its era, and its clicky thumbstick — widely praised as one of the finest controls on any handheld — gave fighting games a tactile quality that Game Boy games could not match.
The NGPC’s library of 82 titles is small but of remarkably high quality — SNK’s fighting game expertise translated beautifully to the handheld format, with excellent versions of King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown, and Metal Slug. SNK’s financial difficulties led to the NGPC’s discontinuation in 2000, cutting short a platform that deserved a longer life. The complete NGPC library is achievable for dedicated collectors, making it a satisfying platform to complete.
