Tiger R-Zone Games — Virtual Reality on a Budget

The Tiger R-Zone, released in 1995, was Tiger Electronics’ attempt to capitalise on the virtual reality gaming trend sparked by Nintendo’s Virtual Boy — a head-mounted game device that projected a red LCD image onto a small screen positioned in front of one eye. Unlike the Virtual Boy’s stereoscopic 3D display, the R-Zone used a simpler single-colour projection system that produced a basic image overlay effect rather than true 3D.

The R-Zone’s game library consisted of small cartridges containing simple games based on licensed properties including Star Wars, Batman, and Mortal Kombat. While the technology was primitive and the games basic, the R-Zone represented Tiger’s characteristic approach of creating affordable licensed game products for the mass market. The R-Zone and its cartridges are today collector’s pieces representing the budget end of 1990s gaming innovation.
