Vectrex Games — The Vector Graphics Console
The Vectrex, released in November 1982 by General Consumer Electronics (later Milton Bradley), was the only home game console ever to use vector graphics — drawing images using lines and points rather than the raster pixels of every other home system. This unique approach produced sharp, precise graphics that didn’t pixelate and moved with a distinctive smoothness impossible on contemporary raster displays. The Vectrex included a built-in 9-inch vector monitor, making it a completely self-contained gaming system requiring no television.
The Vectrex library of 28 official cartridges is small but of remarkable quality — Cinematronics’ classic vector arcade games (Armor Attack, Cosmic Chasm, Rip Off, Star Castle) translated perfectly to the hardware, and original titles like Bedlam and Hyperchase demonstrated the format’s unique aesthetic. The Vectrex was discontinued in 1984 following the video game crash, but its unique technology and design have made it one of the most beloved and collectible gaming systems in history. The active homebrew community continues producing new Vectrex games to this day.
