The Apple iMac G4/700 15-inch (Flat Panel) — The Lamp of Cupertino

Released in January 2002 at Steve Jobs’ Macworld keynote, the iMac G4 was one of the most dramatic product redesigns in Apple’s history. Abandoning the translucent CRT-based design of the iMac G3, Jony Ive’s new iMac placed a flat LCD panel on an articulated arm above a hemispherical base — a design immediately nicknamed ”the lamp” for its resemblance to a desk lamp. It was a genuine piece of industrial art and demonstrated Apple’s uncompromising approach to design at a time when most PC manufacturers were building indistinguishable beige boxes.

The Design

The iMac G4’s genius was its articulated arm — the LCD screen could be repositioned to any angle with a single finger, effortlessly staying wherever it was placed. The hemispherical base contained all the computer’s components — PowerPC G4 processor, hard drive, optical drive, and power supply — leaving only the thin display visible on the desk. This created an unusually clean, uncluttered workspace and made the computer genuinely pleasant to use for extended periods.

Technical Specifications

The 700 MHz PowerPC G4 processor with its AltiVec ”Velocity Engine” provided excellent performance for creative work — graphic design, video editing, and music production. With 256 MB of RAM and a SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW), it was a fully capable professional creative workstation in consumer clothing. Mac OS X 10.1 ran smoothly and made full use of the G4’s capabilities.

Legacy

The iMac G4 is universally regarded as one of the most beautiful computers ever designed. It appears in design museums and galleries worldwide and remains one of the most sought-after Apple collectibles. The 15-inch flat panel model was the original and most iconic version of the design.
